Groundbreaking Held for Comprehensive Cancer Center

2011CancerCenterGroundbreaking_02On Sept. 30, Miami Valley Hospital broke ground at its south campus for a five-story, 87,000 square foot comprehensive cancer center. The ceremony took place four years to the day MVHS opened.

Among the dignitaries who spoke at the ceremony were Doug Kline, Centerville deputy mayor; Charles Bane, MD, president, Dayton Physicians Network; and hospital representatives, Joann Ringer, vice president MVHS, and Bobbie Gerhard, president and CEO, MVH.

The center is being built by MVH, which will own and manage the facility. It will be operated collaboratively by MVH and Dayton Physicians Network. The center will bring together about 35 physicians to provide a wide range of cancer care to patients at one easily accessible location.

Occupancy is planned for January 2013.

Consumer Choose MVH

Dayton-area consumers have again chosen MVH as the leader in overall quality and image among regional healthcare institutions. The results are based on an annual nationwide survey contacted by National Research Corporation (NRC). This is the 16th consecutive year MVH has been awarded NRC’s Consumer Choice Award.

MVH Patient Tower Recognized for Design

2011CancerCenterGroundbreaking_01Miami Valley Hospital’s 12-story patient tower, which opened in January, is earning national recognition for its design and construction. Among the awards bestowed upon the facility are the following:

  • Modern Healthcaremagazine’s Award of Excellence (one of two sleeved among 88 projects nationwide)
  • The Society of American Institute of Architects’ (Ohio Valley Region) Merit Award
  • Ohio Associated Builders and Contractors’ Excellence in Construction Award
  • Mid-Tennessee Associated Builders and Contractors’ Top Eagle Award

MVH Goes Green in Maternity Care

In October, Miami Valley Hospital’s Maternity Center became the first in the region to provide

safer and more natural maternity and postpartum care products. The change follows a year of research on environmental toxicants and the health risks they pose to newborns and their moms.

The first phase of the green campaign involves the products used in the postpartum care rooms. Previously, moms would receive up to 10 different products to use including lotions, shampoos and baby wipes. Those products have been replaced with just two simple items – a certified organic castile soap and calendula oil – neither of which contains any added chemicals, fragrances, artificial preservatives or dyes.

MVH, which currently offers a “green” patenting class for expectant parents, is continuing to evaluate current practices that will help its maternity services to continue “going green.”

Many Reasons To Give

The Miami Valley Hospital Foundation raises funds and awareness for patient programs and services that are beyond the scope of the hospital’s operating budget. These programs provide health education, aid in prevention and rehabilitation, and enhance clinical care for patients and their families.
