Area Teens Discover Medical Careers at Annual MVH Healthcare Career Camp

(Dayton, OH) July 13, 2012 – By next Thursday afternoon, 14 area high school students will have trouped through Miami Valley Hospital to get a better idea of the multiple careers in healthcare. The students are members of the fourth annual Healthcare Career Investigation Camp, or as organizers say, HCI: Miami Valley Hospital. The camp begins on Monday, July 16.

The camp is intended for students who attend one of the hospital’s partnership high schools. Most of the campers are interested in pursing a career in the healthcare field and all have a chance over four days to speak to professionals about educational requirements and job duties.

“We have structured HCI as an opportunity to give the students an up-close look at the many different careers in the medical field,” says Cheryl Woodward a certified athletic trainer at the hospital’s Sports Medicine Center and organizer of the camp. “Over the course of the four day camp we provide lectures, hands on experiences and opportunities for the students to speak to staff members about healthcare careers.”

Students rotate though both nursing units and support areas of the hospital such as the pharmacy, nutrition services and rehabilitation medicine.  A highlight of the camp is a tour of CareFlight the hospital’s air ambulance and the emergency and trauma center.

On Wednesday students will participate in simulation training in the mobile education laboratory. Alongside trained staff they will use patient simulators to perform intubations and cardiopulminary resuscitation. Students will also visit the hospital’s bioscience research lab and get an up close look at how certain human organs function.

Careers in healthcare are among the most in-demand jobs today with a wide range of medical positions seeking qualified applicants. Woodward says not only will this experience provide students with first hand knowledge, perhaps when they complete medical training they will consider returning to Miami Valley Hospsital for employment in their future.

Camp hours are Monday thru Wednesday 8:30 am to 3:30 pm and Thursday 8:30 am to noon.

If you are interested in learning more about the camp or would like to cover the event as a story, please call Cheryl Woodward at (937) 673-1569.
