Urologic Cancer Surgery

The professionals at Miami Valley Hospital’s Cancer Care Center are highly experienced in surgically treating urologic cancers. We are proud to offer the latest technology in treatment options, while also maintaining an unsurpassed level of personal care for each of our patients.

Prostate Cancer

Robotic surgery was first used to remove prostate cancer, and later adapted for kidney cancer and bladder cancer procedures.

Minimally-invasive surgery allows surgeons to perform complex procedures through small incisions. The potential benefits of the da Vinci® prostatectomy are:

Effective cancer control — Studies have shown that experienced surgeons have achieved excellent results in removing prostate cancer without leaving cancer cells behind

Improved and early return of sexual function

Improved and early return of urinary continence

Improved results over traditional treatments — Surgery has a higher and longer survival rate, and a lower risk of long-term complications than radiation or other treatments

Kidney Cancer

Several types of cancer can develop in the kidneys. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the most common form, accounts for approximately 85 percent of all cases. Treatment for kidney cancer depends on the clinical stage of the tumor.

The da Vinci® Surgical System enables Miami Valley Hospital surgical urologists to perform partial, simple, and radical robotic nephrectomy (kidney removal) procedures. Robotic neophrectomy surgery is minimally-invasive, and results in less blood loss and fewer complications for the patient.

Bladder Cancer

There are two main surgeries for bladder cancer. Transurethral resection (TUR) removes cancerous cells from the bladder. Cystectomy removes all or part of the bladder if cancer has spread into the bladder muscle.

The da Vinci® Surgical System offers 3D magnification, giving Miami Valley Hospital surgical urologists’ better precision during this procedure. In turn, the technique avoids damage to vital nerves and muscle tissue. Robotic surgery offers bladder cancer patients an effective procedure with smaller incisions, less blood loss and less post-operative complications.
