National Recognition for Heart Care
To help consumers understand, compare, and evaluate hospital performance, Healthgrades provides objective, comprehensive information about healthcare quality in America’s hospitals. Unlike other hospital quality analyses, Healthgrades evaluates hospital quality for conditions and procedures based solely on clinical outcomes. They measure hospital performance for the most common in-hospital procedures and adjust for each patient’s risk factors, such as age, gender, and medical conditions. Healthgrades’ analyses are based on more than 45 million Medicare medical claims records for the most recent three-year time period available from nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide. Five-star ratings are awarded to hospitals with better than expected outcomes.

Magnet Recognition for Nursing Excellence
The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s(ANCC) Magnet Recognition® is not a prize or award. It is a credential of organizational recognition for nursing excellence and the highest honor a hospital can receive in the field of professional nursing from the American Nurses Association(ANA). Magnet designation recognizes when a hospital’s nursing staff meets the ANCC’s high standards for patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice. Hospitals that achieve this recognition must provide an environment that empowers nurses, values their contributions, and supports nursing leadership. According to the ANA, Magnet hospitals consistently deliver better patient outcomes than non-Magnet hospitals.
Miami Valley Hospital earned its first Magnet Recognition in 2004. At that time, Miami Valley Hospital was the first hospital in Dayton, the fifth in Ohio, and one of only 115 hospitals nationwide to receive such distinction for outstanding nursing practices. Since then, we have earned re-certification in 2008 and 2013.
Beacon Award for Excellence™
The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses(AACN) created the Beacon Award for Excellence™ to recognize individual nursing units that distinguish themselves by improving every facet of patient care. According to the AACN, earning a Beacon Award for Excellence is a significant milestone on the path to exceptional patient care and healthy work environments. Units that achieve this three-year, three-level award with a gold, silver, or bronze designation meet national criteria consistent with Magnet recognition, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and the National Quality Healthcare Award.
In 2011, Miami Valley's Heart and Vascular Intensive Care was the first critical care unit in Dayton to receive this distinction. In 2014, MVH earned the Silver Award by meeting the following evidence-based Beacon Award for Excellence™ criteria: leadership structures and systems; appropriate staffing and staff engagement; effective communication, knowledge management, learning, and development; evidence-based practice and processes; and outcome measurements.
American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) Certification
