Detection & Prevention
Miami Valley Hospital’s Neuroscience Institute has powerful tools, technologies and experience to diagnose neurological conditions and determine the most appropriate treatment for your needs. We also offer screening and education to help you know your risks.
Faster Diagnosis for Better Outcomes
Technologies such as the broad Premier Health TeleStroke Network and advanced imaging, combined with our specialists’ years of experience, can diagnose neurological conditions sooner, potentially resulting in better outcomes.
During a stroke, time is brain. At Premier Health our specialized team of stroke specialists is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to immediately diagnose stroke using our TeleStroke Network.
Without losing critical time, a stroke patient arriving at these emergency departments can be examined via a computer linked to a Premier on-call stroke specialist any time of the day or night. The specialist can “see” the patient, ask questions and view CT scans - all in real-time - to help assess the patient’s condition and help the ED physician determine if the patient is a candidate for acute stroke therapy.
This technology dramatically increases the speed of treatment and leads to better outcomes. Neurologists must assess, diagnose and treat a stroke patient as soon as possible after the beginning signs of a stroke for therapies to be effective. Getting treatment quickly is also important to minimize brain damage.
Patients who need the highest level of stroke care are transferred via CareFlight Air and Mobile Services to Miami Valley Hospital for advanced stroke care, such as endovascular stroke rescue therapies.
Advanced Medical Imaging and Other Tests
Miami Valley Hospital offers advanced imaging technologies to help diagnose a full range of neurological conditions. Technologies include:
Identifying a Neurological Condition
Many neurological conditions have no screening tests or warning signs. Some have genetic links, while others have risk factors similar to diabetes and heart disease. For some conditions, personal choices, like smoking, diet, and exercise may play a role. No matter what the cause, the Neuroscience Institute at Miami Valley Hospital has the experience you can trust to diagnose and treat your condition.
While no one can prevent a stroke, there are some known risk factors that you can control, including high blood pressure, heart disease and smoking. By knowing and keeping these risk factors under control, you can decrease your stroke risk. Premier Health offers community health screenings that can help you identify stroke risks early, when you can still address them. Check our calendar for upcoming screenings, programs and events.
