Services and Procedures
The Respiratory Care department at Miami Valley Hospital offers award-winning services to patients with lung disease and other respiratory conditions. Therapists provide these services in the following areas:
Diagnostic Care – The registered pulmonary function technologist guides you through a series of breathing tests. These tests are given to our pulmonologists, who evaluate the results and provide a diagnosis for your doctor. Your primary care physician may require further treatment. Respiratory therapists may also assist in endoscopy, surgical or imaging procedures if necessary.
Emergency Care – The respiratory therapist is responsible for the emergency airway management, breathing treatments and mechanical ventilation in the Emergency and Trauma Center. The respiratory therapist provides professional evaluation and treatment in consultation with your Emergency Department team.
Acute Care – In the acute care areas, respiratory therapists evaluate and initiate oxygen therapy, secretion removal and medicated aerosols based on physician order. The therapist works with you to help you understand your breathing medicines and therapies.
Critical Care – Respiratory therapists work with the critical care team to stabilize and support breathing using mechanical ventilators and specialty techniques. Therapists wean you from breathing support and help you clear secretions using various techniques.
Neonatal Care – These specialty trained respiratory therapists are involved in to a wide range of interventions including delivery room care of newborns and airway support. They also support the delivery of oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide until the baby’s lungs are mature enough to function independently. Many of the neonatal respiratory therapists fly with our NeoFlight neonatal transport team.
Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation – Respiratory therapists treat patients with COPD and other lung diseases, teaching breathing techniques and developing muscle tone and exercise tolerance. These services may improve exercise tolerance and help you be more active.
Respiratory Diseases and Conditions
Respiratory or lung diseases include asthma, pneumonia, tuberculosis, lung cancer and many others.
Asthma can be a life-threatening disease if not properly managed. Generally, asthma is reversible with treatment and many symptoms may be prevented if you know your triggers. It may become a chronic disease of the airways that makes breathing difficult.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
COPD is a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It is an umbrella term for asthma, chronic broncitis, and emphysema and a range of other lung disorders.
- Emphysema is a chronic disease of the lungs associated with breathlessness, chronic cough, excessive sputum and progressive loss of lung function.
- Chronic bronchitis is an inflammation of the main airways in the lungs that continues for a long period or keeps coming back.
Pneumonia is a general term that refers to an infection of the lungs caused by a variety of microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites.
