Our Job Is You

When patients arrive at the hospital for an outpatient test or other procedure, their first point of contact is the Patient Access Center, an area you may know as Registration or Admitting.

This staff’s work isn’t easy. They ask a lot of personal questions of people who often aren’t feeling well and are facing a difficult or frightening medical situation. And for the increasing number of patients with an insurance co-pay, their job is to collect it.

You may find it surprising that patients take the time to tell me how employees in the center take pride in putting patients and their family members at ease.

Recently I visited the Access Center to personally congratulate Emma Dewberry, Woody Beam, Karen Yeager, Sheree Lacy and Doris Hunnel.  Each of them has been recognized by patients for the caring way they greet patients and help them feel comfortable as they arrive at the hospital.

These five individuals and their colleagues embrace a concept we call “My Job Is You.”  The phrase captures our belief that patients are the reason Miami Valley Hospital exists, and their positive experience is our top priority. Here at Miami Valley Hospital, the term “patient” means more than the person who is being treated. We regard family members and anyone concerned or worried about their loved one as “patients” needing our care.

One of the patients who called about an Access Center employee said, “Meeting people like that really makes your day.”

I couldn’t agree more.
