Services and Procedures

Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio has a variety of extensive, specialized rehabilitation programs.

The Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Program (CORP) offers same-day rehabilitation to those with stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other neurological conditions to help them get back to a functional life. The program provides coordinated interdisciplinary same-day rehabilitation services that address the cognitive, physical, and/or psychosocial aspects of return-to-life roles within the community. Patients that are medically stable and have the desire and potential to improve their functional levels may benefit from same-day rehabilitation services. This includes MVH Rehabilitation Institute patients who have been recently discharged from the hospital as well as those who are currently living in the community. MVH Rehabilitation Institute patients that participate in the program are generally recovering from diagnoses such as stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple traumas, or other neurological conditions.

The CORP team guides MVH Rehabilitation Institute patients through rehabilitation that is centered on self-care, home safety, home management, communication, socialization, cognition, work and school skills, leisure activities, community re-entry, mobility, and swallowing. The MVH Rehabilitation Institute team provides services including:

  • Occupational therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Speech pathology
  • Social work/case management
  • Rehab nursing
  • Rehabilitation medicine (physician medical direction)
  • Team treatment planning
  • Education
  • Community resources
  • Adapted Sports and Recreation Program

MVH Rehabilitation Institute patients with deficits in two or more of the following skill areas may benefit from CORP:

  • Self care
  • Home safety
  • Home management
  • Communication
  • Socialization
  • Cognition
  • Work and school skills
  • Leisure activities
  • Community re-entry
  • Mobility
  • Swallowing

On average, CORP patients receive treatment two days per week and remain in the program for about eight weeks. Program statistics show that MVH Rehabilitation Institute patients achieve 73 percent of their therapy goals. Patient satisfaction scores show an average of 93 percent satisfaction with CORP services.

CORP is CARF-accredited for Brain Injury Services and Spinal Cord Services for both adolescents and adults.

Spinal Cord Injury Program

The Spinal Cord Injury Program offers evaluation, treatment, and educational services to MVH Rehabilitation Institute patients. Spinal cord injury patients live with a disability. In addition to helping them get the most function possible from their body, MVH’s Spinal Cord Injury also helps them learn to deal with daily functional issues, such as respiratory care, skin care, bowel/bladder maintenance, sexuality, activities of daily living (dressing, bathing, etc.), transfers, and mobility. Equipment recommendations are also addressed. The inpatient and outpatient services provided by the Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio’s Spinal Cord Injury Programs are CARF-accredited for adolescents and adults.

Brain Injury Program

The Brain Injury Program addresses unique educational and recovery needs in MVH Rehabilitation Institute patients. Physical and cognitive tests are done with each patient to establish an individualized treatment plan for facilitating functional progress. The Dayton Chapter of the Ohio Brain Injury Association holds support group meetings at MVH for ongoing support of patients and families. The inpatient and outpatient services provided by the Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio’s Brain Injury Programs are CARF-accredited for adolescents and adults and are staffed with Brain Injury Specialists certified by the American Academy of Brain Injury Specialists.

Stroke Rehabilitation Program

The Stroke Rehabilitation Program offers evaluation, treatment, and educational services for MVH Rehabilitation Institute patients. Treatment goals and plans address issues of cognition, communication, eating, activities of daily living, mobility skills, and psycho-social factors. Education and support meetings for MVH Rehabilitation Institute patients and families provide additional information. The Stroke program is a specialty program of The MVH Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio’s CARF- accredited inpatient rehabilitation program. MVH Rehabilitation Institute has received commendation as a Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals Organization (JCAHO) Stroke Diagnostic Certification for this program’s comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services.

General Rehabilitation Teams

General Rehabilitation Teams address the needs of MVH Rehabilitation Institute patients recovering from amputations, multiple trauma, and neurological and orthopedic conditions. The teams give individualized education and treatment toward goals set by the MVH Rehabilitation Institute patient and team in their CARF-Accredited Programs for adults and adolescents. The Dayton Area Amputee Support Group meets at MVH Rehabilitation Institute for both patients and family members.

Swallowing Disorders Program

Swallowing disorders may occur as a result of stroke, head injury, progressive neurological disorder, head and neck cancer, and cerebral palsy. This MVH Rehabilitation Institute program offers evaluation and treatment services for patients.

Extended Educational Opportunities

The Independent Living Apartment (ILA) is like a practice home for MVH Rehabilitation Institute patients. Patients practice daily living skills in a home environment with the guidance of hospital staff. In some cases, a day or overnight pass called a temporary leave of absences (TLOA) is recommended prior to discharge so patients can try out their skills at home. Some insurance plans do not permit this type of practice session away from the hospital, but do promote practice sessions in the ILA. Once a stay in the ILA or a TLOA pass has been completed, the patient and MVH Rehabilitation Institute staff discuss problems encountered so they can be addressed during the remainder of their rehabilitation program.
