Two Premier Health Partner hospitals earn 2008 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence
Miami Valley and Good Samaritan recognized among top five percent in nation by HealthGrades Quality Study
DAYTON, Ohio, January 31, 2008 – Premier Health Partners announced today that both Miami Valley and Good Samaritan hospitals have received the HealthGrades 2008 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. This award honors the top five percent of hospitals throughout the nation that meet established clinical standards.
The 2008 award marks the second consecutive year Miami Valley Hospital has received the award. Good Samaritan Hospital has been recognized by HealthGrades as a distinguished hospital twice in the past four years.
“We have always put the welfare of our patients ahead of any other consideration,” said Mary Boosalis, president and CEO of Miami Valley Hospital. “So it is especially gratifying to be recognized at a national level for excellence in patient outcomes. When you add our excellent medical team of physicians, nurses and support services with our ever-expanding facilities, you can see we are uniquely equipped to deliver health care excellence to the Dayton region.”
“The bottom line is this: people are more likely to have successful treatment without major complications and lower mortality at a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence. This is a huge comfort to our patients, and a wonderful point of pride for our physicians, employees, and staff,” said Jim Pancoast, president and CEO of Good Samaritan Hospital. “This team is compassionately committed to our patients’ well-being through the delivery of high quality medical care, and our greatest reward is helping our patients get back into their lives.”
Last October, HealthGrades recognized several centers of excellence at both Miami Valley and Good Samaritan for excellence. Miami Valley Hospital received an excellence award for coronary intervention, as well as five-star ratings in:
- Coronary interventional procedures
- Spine surgery
- Treatment of heart attack, heart failure, respiratory failure, community acquired pneumonia, gastro-intestinal bleeding and sepsis
Good Samaritan Hospital received excellence awards for orthopedic surgery, joint replacement, stroke care and pulmonary care, as well as five-star ratings for:
- Heart valve replacement
- Treatment of respiratory failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary embolism, bowel obstruction, diabetic acidosis and coma, sepsis and community acquired pneumonia
- Hip fracture repair, total knee replacement and total hip replacement
HealthGrades is the most comprehensive study of hospital quality in America, producing ratings for every non-federal hospital in 27 diagnoses and procedures. Hospitals that receive the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence are those hospitals that place among the top five percent nationally when all 27 ratings are aggregated into a comprehensive score.
According to HealthGrades, the study shows that Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence outperformed all other hospitals across the procedures and diagnoses that were reviewed.
HealthGrades estimates that 171,424 lives could have been saved and 9,671 post-operative complications could have been avoided over the three years studied if all Medicare patients were treated at Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence.
