Pint-Size Guests Enjoy Abby’s Nook at Miami Valley South Health Center
Dayton, OH – August 1, 2008 – Miami Valley South Health Center now has a dedicated spot near its emergency department to entertain pint-size guests. Called Abby’s Nook, the area features shelves of children’s books, furniture made to-scale for young visitors and a 75-gallon salt water aquarium filled with colorful marine life.
The newly created space in the emergency department rotunda is made possible through a generous donation by long time Miami Valley Hospital supporters and Bellbrook residents Karin Spicer and her husband Ed Blake. Karin is a published author of several children’s books and is a strong advocate of childhood literacy. When the hospital’s foundation approached the couple about making a donation to MVSHC to fund a reading area, they eagerly agreed.
The book nook is named after Karin’s gray and white cat, Abby, who is also the main character in two books. The books are given to youngsters who are treated in the emergency department. Several photos of Abby taken and donated by pet photographer Ann Reynolds are displayed in the reading area.
Abby’s Nook will be dedicated 10 a.m. Monday, August 4. Youngsters from Hope United Methodist Church, located across the street from the Miami Valley South Health Center campus have been invited to be the first to try out Abby’s Nook. After a short dedication ceremony, Karin will read a story to the young guests before they receive a tour of the emergency department.
“The rotunda is a lovely area for visitors to sit when visiting our facility. Now thanks to the generosity of Karin and her husband, our young guests will have a cozy space to explore and enjoy shelves of books,” says Joann Ringer, administrator of Miami Valley South Health Center.
The book shelves were donated in part by Vaughn Interior Concepts, a local family-owned business and participant in building the Miami Valley South Health Center.
Miami Valley South Health Center is located near the intersection of Wilmington and Clyo Roads in Centerville.
