The Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) Pain Center has a unique team consisting of a board-certified physician and advanced practice nurses to assist in treating and managing patient pain. Advanced practice nurses have attained a master’s level education, national certification, specialized training in pain management, and certification in their area of expertise. Under the physician’s direction, Advanced Practice Nurses can order medications, order tests and therapies, offer patient consultation, devise a treatment plan and conduct and analyze research.
Townsend Smith III, MD, Anesthesiology
Dr. Townsend Smith III has served as Director of Pain Services at Miami Valley Hospital since 1997. Prior to this position, Dr. Smith served as Associate Director of the Pain Center at the Ohio State University Medical Center and was Associate Clinical Professor at Wright State University School of Medicine.
Dr. Smith received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Slippery Rock State University in 1983. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Ohio State University in 1987; graduating Summa Cum Laude.
Dr. Smith is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and is Diplomat American Board of Pain Management in Anesthesiology. He completed his rotating internship at Riverside Methodist Hospital in 1988, his anesthesiology residency at the Ohio State University Medical Center in 1991, and completed a fellowship in pain management at OSU in 1996. Dr. Smith is considered a preeminent expert in the field of pain management.
Dr. Smith practices in the hospital and is readily available to patient, family members, medical staff and primary care physicians to ensure the best possible care delivered.
Joy L. Harshbarger, Program Manager
Joy Harshbarger has served as Program Manager of Pain Services and EMG/Physiatry at Miami Valley Hospital since 2002. Prior to this position, Joy worked at MVH as Administrative Manager of Patient Registration and the Preadmission Unit. She also served as Director of Patient Accounts Registration at Upper Valley Medical Center.
Joy received her Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the College of Mount St. Joseph and her Associate of Science in Business Management from Sinclair Community College.
April Hickey, RN, MSN, CNRN
April Hickey is Clinical Coordinator of the Miami Valley Pain Center. She is also a clinical nurse specialist for the pain center and provides back up services for inpatients. April received a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Florida in 1983, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland in 1979.
Cheryl L. Rawe, MS, RN, CNS, BC, Pain Services
Cheryl Rawe has served as a Clinical Nurse Specialist of Pain Services at Miami Valley Hospital since 2003. Prior to this position, Cheryl worked at MVH as a clinical nurse educator for the Renal/Diabetic Unit, and as a staff nurse for various medical-surgical and cardiac nursing units.
Cheryl received her Bachelor of Arts degree in education for the University of Kentucky in 1972. She received her Associate Degree in Nursing in 1988, and her Master of Science in Nursing from Wright State University in 2003. Cheryl holds national certification as an Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist. She is board certified in Pain Management from the American Nurses Credentialing Association.
Carole A. Smith, MS, CNS, BC, CCRN
Carole joined the Pain Service as the perioperative clinical nurse specialist in March 2011. Formerly, Carole served as the Orthopedic clinical nurse specialist at Miami Valley Hospital and the Pain/Palliative Care clinical nurse specialist at Good Samaritan Hospital. She also has held staff nurse positions at Miami Valley Hospital in intensive care and CareFlight.
Carole graduated from Community Hospital School of Nursing, Springfield, Ohio in 1985. She obtained her BSN from Capital University in 1992 and Master of Science from Wright State University in 2005. She is board-certified in adult health by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center. Additionally, she is certified in critical care nursing by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
Kim Temple, MS, RN, CNS, Pain Services
Kim Temple has served as a Clinical Nurse Specialist of Pain Services at Miami Valley Hospital since 2008. Prior to this position, Kim worked at Premier Health partner Good Samaritan Hospital for over 17 years in critical care, program development/management, and nursing education.
Kim received her Associate Degree in Nursing from Kettering College of Medical Arts in 1991. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Indiana Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1998, and received her Master of Science in Nursing from Wright State University in 2008. Kim holds national certification as an adult acute/critical care clinical nurse specialist from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
