Meet the experienced team of the Miami Valley Hospital Intensive Care Unit (MVH ICU).
Gnan Thakore, MD, FCCP, Medical Director, Medical ICU
Dr. Thakore is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. He received his medical degree from B.J. Medical College at Gujarat University and did his specialty fellowship at Brown University. Dr. Thakore is a fellow in the Society of Critical Care Medicine and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine.
Melissa Whitmill, MD, FACS, Medical Director, Surgical ICU
Dr. Whitmill is board-certified in General Surgery and Critical Care Medicine. She received her medical degree and residency at Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine, and did her fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Melissa is also the Director of Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Wright State University.
James M. Pacenta, MD, FACC, Medical Director, Heart and Vascular Intensive Care Unit
Dr. James Pacenta is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular disease and Interventional Cardiology. He graduated from The Ohio State University, School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond, Virginia and his cardiology fellowship at University of Pittsburgh Health Center Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Pacenta was Chief of Staff at Miami Valley Hospital from 2009 to 2010. He currently serves as Director of the Heart and Vascular Intensive Care Unit at Miami Valley Hospital. Prior to this he served as the Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation.
Travis Perry, MD, Medical Director, MVH Burn Unit
Dr. Travis Perry joined MVH in 2007. He started his education at Winston Salem State University in North Carolina, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology on a NASA scholarship. Dr. Perry then went to East Carolina State University School of Medicine, where he received his Doctorate of Medicine.
Dr. Perry also completed a Surgical Critical Care and Burn Fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Galveston. He has received additional certification in Advanced Burn Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support and Basic Cardiac Life Support.
R. Michael Johnson, MD, FACS Associate Director of the MVH Burn Unit, Chief of the Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine
Dr. R. Michael Johnson joined MVH in 1995. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy at the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and earned his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He did his residency in General Surgery at MVH and his residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Dr. Johnson is fellowship trained.
During his time at MVH, Dr. Johnson has taught at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine as an Assistant Clinical Professor, a Junior Resident Instructor, and an Associate Professor.
Alison Potts, RN, BSN, Director of Nursing
Alison Potts has been with Miami Valley Hospital since 2002. Before her appointment to Director of Nursing in 2012, Alison was the manager of the Pulmonary Advanced Care Unit. Alison has served in a variety of leadership positions, including educator and Bed Flow manager. Alison oversees the Medical and Surgical ICU’s, Pulmonary Units, Burn Center, Advanced Care Unit, and Enterostomal Therapy. She is a graduate of The Ohio State University.
Deborah K. Minton, RN, MSN, Director Cardiovascular Services and Heart and Vascular ICU
Deb Minton has been with Miami Valley Hospital since 1995. She has been the Director of Cardiovascular Services since accepting the position in January 2013. Prior to that, Deb was the Nurse Manager of the Heart & Vascular Patient Care Unit 7. She has served in a variety of positions, including Shift Manager, Administrative Officer, Clinical Project Manager at Miami Valley South Hospital and Inpatient Nurse Manager Lead with the Miami Valley Hospital South East Addition. She received her BSN at Wright State University in 1995 and her Master's of Science in HealthCare Administration from Central Michigan University in 2009.
Heather Rupp, RN, BSN, Nurse Manager, Medical ICU
Heather Rupp has been employed at MVH since 1997. Heather has been the Nurse Manager of the Medical ICU since July 2010 and prior to that, Nurse Manager of the Neuroscience Unit. Heather has served in a variety of positions, including staff nurse, Team Leader, and Nurse Clinical Educator while on the Neuroscience Unit. Heather received her undergraduate degree from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2007.
Kathy Zink, RN, MS, Nurse Manager, Surgical ICU
Kathy Zink has been the Nurse Manager of the MVH ICU since 1999. She has been employed at MVH since 1981, holding positions as staff nurse, Clinical Educator, and Clinical Nurse Specialist in the ICU. Kathy received her undergraduate and her Master’s degrees from Wright State University in 1980 and 1994, respectively.
Jeanie Heyd RN, MS, NE-C, Nurse Manager, Heart and Vascular ICU
Jeanie Heyd has been with Premier Health since 1985. She received her BSN at Eastern Kentucky University in 1986 and her Masters in Nursing Administration from Wright State University in 1992. She spent twenty five years at Good Samaritan Hospital in Critical Care as a staff nurse, team leader and manager of the ICU. She was appointed manager of the Heart and Vascular ICU at MVH in 2010.
Amy Teague, RN, BSN, Nurse Manager, Neurological ICU
Amy Teague has been with Miami Valley Hospital since 2004. She has served as the Nurse Manager of the Neuro Intensive Care Unit since January 2012. Prior to her time in the Neuro ICU, Amy was employed in the Emergency and Trauma Center at MVH holding positions as staff nurse, Nursing Clinical Educator, and Associate Nurse Manager.
Melora Waltman, RN, BS, Nurse Manager, Burn Unit
Melora Waltman is the Nurse Manager of the MVH Burn Center. She graduated with a diploma in Nursing from MVH School of Nursing in 1981. She earned her Bachelor of Science from Andrews University in 1993.
Melora has worked as a nurse at MVH since 1981. She joined the MVH Burn Center as a staff nurse in 1984. Since that time, she has held several roles within the Burn Center and has been the Nurse Manager since 1994.
Melora is a national faculty member of the Advanced Burn Life Support course.
