Miami Valley Hospital Earns 2009 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence
Study puts MVH among top Five Percent of Nation’s Hospitals
Dayton, Ohio (January 27, 2009) – For the third consecutive year, Miami Valley Hospital has received HealthGrades’ Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award.
The hospital is one of only 270 hospitals in the nation to receive this distinction. The award is based on an independent study released today by HealthGrades, a leading healthcare ratings company.
"We have worked very hard to become the best hospital possible for our community," said Mary Boosalis, president and CEO of Miami Valley Hospital. “Earning this distinction three years in a row speaks to the consistency of the level of care our team provides. Because this particular award is based on actual patient outcomes, it means a lot to us. I'm very proud of the medical staff, employees, and volunteers who have a 'patients first' approach to everything they do. Their dedication to excellence has enabled us to achieve these outcomes for our patients."
The award places Miami Valley Hospital in the top five percent of hospitals in the nation for overall clinical quality. According to the HealthGrades study, Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence had mortality rates that were, on average, 27 percent lower than other hospitals, and major complication rates that were eight percent lower.
“For the past seven years HealthGrades has conducted the most comprehensive studies of hospital quality in America, producing ratings for every non-federal hospital,” according to Rick May, MD, HealthGrades senior physician consultant, and author of the study. “Hospitals that receive the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence are those hospitals that excel across the 26 procedures and diagnoses rated.”
Last October, HealthGrades awarded Miami Valley Hospital with the Cardiac Care Excellence Award and Cardiac interventional Excellence Award with five-star ratings for overall cardiac care, cardiac services, coronary intervention procedures, treatment of heart attack and treatment of heart failure.
