Miami Valley Hospital Launches New Service Directed to Referring Physicians

DAYTON, OHIO (May 5, 2009) —As a large regional medical center with  hundreds of referring physicians, Miami Valley Hospital is committed to making the process of admitting patients as easy as possible.

The hospital has launched a new service that makes it easier for physicians at outlying hospitals to refer patients to the tertiary programs that it and the members of its medical staff offer. The service, called Access and Transfer Center, is staffed around the clock. It allows for a single, well-defined transfer process for all patients.

By calling one toll-free number to the Access and Transfer Center, physicians at outlying hospitals can make arrangements to transfer a patient to Miami Valley at any hour of the day or night, seven days a week. Once a call is placed the Access and Transfer Center staff go into action coordinating hospital resources to meet the needs of the patients, physicians, and referring hospitals by coordinating the transfer process. The center’s staff will arrange for helicopter or ground transport, as needed, via CareFlight Air and Mobile.

“This is an initiative that has been used successfully at other large medical centers around the nation,” says Diane Pleiman, vice president, Hospital Operations. “We visited several centers while planning our center.

"We see the center as a way for Miami Valley Hospital to provide better customer service to patients, as well as to physicians at outlying facilities.”

According to Pleiman, more than a dozen representatives of medical staff specialties assisted in the planning for the new center’s development.

“We are confident that by providing a simple, reliable referral process, both the hospital and members of the MVH medical staff will benefit from seamless access to our outstanding tertiary programs,” Pleiman continues.
