Regional Cyclists to Pedal for Cancer Benefit Event to benefit programs for MVH cancer patients

DAYTON, OHIO—July 21, 2009 — On August 8 cyclists from across the region will converge on Miami Valley Hospital South in Centerville for the Clemens Cycle for Cancer event.

Now it its seventh year, the rally is named for Richard and Nancy Clemens who both lost their lives to cancer. The Clemens’ seven children developed the idea for the cycling event as a way to honor their parents and to raise funds for cancer research and education.

All proceeds from this year’s ride will benefit Miami Valley Hospital’s cancer research and oncology services as funded through the Miami Valley Hospital Foundation. Organizers hope to attract more than 100 riders to this year’s event. Proceeds from the 2008 ride touched 4,600 individuals through various cancer screening events, education and awareness initiatives.

This year’s event will feature a new Hero Wall for riders to post photos honoring loved ones who have fought cancer. The Hero Wall will serve both as an inspiration and a remainder of why this fundraiser is important to Miami Valley Hospital cancer patients. Riders are encouraged to place a photo of their honoree on the Honor Wall.  The Honor Wall will remain on display at Miami Valley Hospital South following the event.

Registration for this year’s ride gets underway at 7 a.m. at Miami Valley Hospital South. Cyclists depart from the campus at 8 a.m. Participants can follow their choice of a 10, 25, or 50 mile route through scenic southern Montgomery and Greene Counties. Participants of all ages are welcome.  Registration is $25 per rider and can be paid in advance on line or the day of the event. Forms, maps, and general information about the ride can be found at or by calling the Miami Valley Hospital Foundation at 937-208-2700.

“On behalf of the doctors and nurses who work in our oncology department, we are proud to be the beneficiary of this fundraiser to benefit cancer patients and their families,” said Jenny Lewis, president of the Miami Valley Hospital Foundation. “Every dollar from the proceeds will allow our cancer team to get one step closer to saving lives and making lives more comfortable.”

The ride will finish at Miami Valley Hospital South. Refreshments compliments of Panera Bread and Cub Foods will be available.
