MVH Trauma Outreach Coordinator Honored
DAYTON, OHIO (August 6, 2009) – Cynthia Achterberg, RN, outreach coordinator for the Miami Valley Hospital’s Trauma Center, has been awarded a special honor by the Community Blood Center-Dayton. The center recently presented her with a “Shining Star of Friends and Family” award of excellence.
Achterberg was recognized for her exceptional efforts to encourage blood donation. During her less than one year in the position of trauma outreach coordinator, she has invited more than 200 families of trauma patients to participate in the Friends and Family blood donation program, has helped generate about 500 Friend and Family blood donations, and has been involved in organizing multiple blood drives.
“I am passionate about the Friends and Family blood donation program,” says Achterberg. “In our region there are 25 hospitals that use over 375 units of blood a day. Because Miami Valley Hospital is a level one trauma center, it uses about one fourth of that supply in a 24-hour period. By encouraging friends and family members of trauma patients to donate, we are able to help to keep a fresh blood supply available and do not have to ration blood products.”
Achterberg, a Tipp City resident, has worked in various patient care areas at Miami Valley Hospital including intensive care and the neonatal intensive care unit. She holds a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Mount Saint Joseph College in Cincinnati.
