Cardiac Surgery headshotComplicated Cardiac Surgery Collaboration Is Key to Success

Boosalis HeadshotThis year marks an important milestone in the history of Miami Valley Hospital – our 120th anniversary!

On Oct. 20, 1890, the Deaconess Society of Dayton received a charter from the state of Ohio to operate MVH. The society was affiliated with St. John’s Evangelical Church, which today is called St. John’s United Church of Christ.

Over the years, we have grown into a leading healthcare institution with a national reputation. Those who founded our hospital could scarcely have imagined the hospital that exists today – the extensive campus, including MVH South; the advanced technology used to save lives; and the hundreds of medical specialists available to treat complex illnesses and injuries.

In 1890, for example, the significance of a Level I Trauma Center would not have been known. But today, the fact that MVH holds this designation means that trauma victims have a greater chance of survival than they would elsewhere. The story of a young motorcycle accident victim, featured in this issue of ProHealth, makes that point. Also featured in this issue is advanced medical care unknown a century ago – cardiac surgery, bariatric surgery and pain management.

One thing that has not changed over the years is the location of the main campus. It has not moved from its original site, although it has expanded. Our founders would be pleased that the hospital has been steadfast in its commitment to the city of Dayton. They would also be pleased with the latest expansion – the 12-story Southeast Addition – by far the hospital’s largest and most transforming addition. You can see that for yourself by attending the grand opening on Jan. 9, 2011, which will feature tours, health
screenings and entertainment. Watch for more information in this publication and the local media closer to the opening day.

Another thing that has not changed over the years is the focus on our patients. Today, MVH continues to fulfill its mission as the region’s leader in healthcare innovation and patient care. We are able to do this because of the commitment of our physicians, employees and volunteers, who appreciate the rich heritage of MVH and are determined to build upon it.
