On Aug. 16, we began counting down 120 days to the opening of the new patient tower at the southeast edge of our downtown campus. The new facility will open for patients in January.
On Sunday, Dec. 12, Miami Valley Hospital will host a public grand opening starting at 1 p.m. We will invite the entire community to join hospital and public officials for this celebratory event, which will include tours of the facility, entertainment and refreshments. Mark your calendars now so you can be part of this historic opening.
It is fitting that the patient tower, which adds 484,000 square feet to our hospital – including 178 private patient rooms – is opening during our 120th anniversary year. That milestone will also be part of the Patient Tower’s grand opening celebration.
The medical facilities in the new addition will be a boon to our patients as well as the medical professionals who treat them. The Tower’s new Orthopedic Joint and Spine Center and the Heart and Vascular Center will enable us to attract high-caliber physicians, who want to work at hospitals as up-to-date as their skills.
A case in point is Dr. Jerry Ahluwalia, who is featured in this issue of ProHealth in an article about hip arthroscopy. After completing an orthopedic residency at MVH, Dr. Ahluwalia spent a year at the prestigious San Diego Arthritis and Adult Reconstructive Surgery Center, where he received training in complex orthopedic procedures. Dr. Ahluwalia, who recently joined the staff at MVH, is the only orthopedic surgeon in the area fellowship trained to perform hip arthroscopy.
This issue of ProHealth also features two young neurosurgeons who chose to practice at MVH because of the commitment we are making to neuroscience. Now patients needing critical neurological services, including minimally invasive neurointervention, can be treated locally. Such was the situation of Wendy Soto, MD, when she suffered a torn blood vessel and a related aneurysm, which required immediate intervention.
In December, we will celebrate the continuation of our 120-year-old legacy of excellence in healthcare innovation and patient care. Please join us as we look back – but especially forward.
