Skin cancer is a tumor or growth of abnormal cells in our skin. Common types of skin cancer include basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. These cancers occur in the surface layer of the skin and when found early, can be easily cured.
The most serious type of skin cancer is called malignant melanoma. Melanomas initially appear on the surface of the skin as a change in the shape, size, color, or feel of a mole. If detected early they are easy to treat. If not detected early, they can grow down into the skin and reach blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. Over time, the disease can spread throughout the body, resulting in life-threatening illness.
