The Eight B’s of Holiday Eating

Believe that you Can!

  • Believe that you can get through the holidays
    • Without gaining weight
    • Without feeling guilty
    • Without feeling deprived
  • If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail
  • Celebrate relationships
  • Believe that you can enjoy the holiday
    • Food, friends and family!

Buddy Up

When going to a holiday party, bring a buddy.  Tell others how they can be supportive of you.

  • Avoid socializing while standing by the food
  • Drink low calorie beverages
  • Focus on foods that are high in protein (shrimp, cheese, deviled eggs) 

Be Late!

Call the host and explain that you will be arriving late.  Sometimes by showing up late, you can avoid a portion of the party that may be calorie laden… cocktail hour, hors d’oeuvres, etc.

Beware of Beverages

Beverages can be loaded with extra calories… egg nog, hot chocolate, cranberry juice cocktail, not to mention beverages with alcohol. 

  • Carry a glass of water.  Spruce it up with a sprig of mint or orange slice.  Drinking water will help you avoid extra calories from food and beverages
  • Drink flavored water or a non-alcoholic beverage.  Check out Crystal Light, they have some festive varieties. 

Bring your own food

By bringing a food dish to the party, you will know that you have something that will meet your nutritional needs.  Great foods for parties:

  • Shrimp
  • Chicken kabobs
  • Deviled Eggs
  • Cheese Tray
  • Meat Balls
  • Chili 

Bite Right

Eat the right thing & eat slowly! It is easy to lose track of how much you are eating. 

  • Select a small plate
  • Fill your plate with the appropriate quantities of food and then only eat off of your plate.
  • RESIST the temptation to eat directly from a general or common bowl or plate (ie: chips, nuts, etc)
  • This way, you will know exactly how much you have eaten.  

Remember, it is not just how much you eat, it is also the calories in what you eat that count

Banish the Leftovers

Leftovers can call our name.  If the party is at your house, send the leftovers home with your guests.  

Be Kind to Yourself

Don’t beat yourself up if you have a slip.  If you do slip, take the time to get back to basics.

  • Acknowledge the slip and move on
  • Remind yourself how far you have come
  • Think about what to do to set yourself up for success in the future.
