Miami Valley Hospital Acquires Brown St. Restaurant Property

Jimmie’s Cornerstone Bar and Grille to Switch Corners

(Dayton, OH) January 6, 2011 - Miami Valley Hospital has signed a letter of agreement to purchase the property at 1001 Brown St. currently occupied by Jimmie’s Cornerstone Bar and Grille. The pending sale does not mean the popular bar and eating establishment will be closing. In fact the owners will open at a new location in the neighborhood next summer.

As part of the agreement the hospital will renovate the structure at 936 Brown Street the site of a former Dayton fire house. Retired businessman Tom Nugent recently donated the old Fire House No. 11 to Miami Valley Hospital.

Miami Valley has been in discussion with the owners of the Cornerstone, Jimmie and Sue Brandell, regarding purchasing the property where their business is located. An agreement of sale was signed early last month. The Brandells have operated the Cornerstone at the 1001 Brown Street location for nearly ten years.

The fire house where the Cornerstone is moving has deep historical roots. It dates back to 1892 and was built to serve the South Park neighborhood. In its early years the station housed the Brown Street Hose company, a team of four fire fighters. The fire house is believed to be one of the last Dayton fire houses to use horse-drawn apparatus. It was in continuous use until the new Fire House No. 11 opened at 145 Warren Street in 1987. The City of Dayton sold the property to Nugent the same year.

Renovation on the two-story structure, which has approximately 6,000 square-feet of space, will begin this month. A new kitchen will be added along with adjacent customer parking to the north of the building. Dayton contractor Mark Shannon has been hired as Project Manager to oversee the renovation and construction and he will be working closely with architect Mark Fisher of the Fisher Group Architects.

The Cornerstone Bar and Grille will continue to serve their loyal customers at its current location until construction and renovation is completed on the firehouse. The Brandells expect to move sometime this summer and when they do the new establishment will open with a new name, Jimmie’s Ladder 11, a tip-of-the hat to the old fire station and to firefighters serving Dayton.

Miami Valley Hospital has no immediate plans for the 1001 Brown St. property once it is vacated.
