Vol 31 Neurointervention ToCNeurointervention
A New Stroke Protocol at MVH

Gerhart HSThis year is the 30th anniversary of ProHealth magazine. It was launched in early 1981 with the expressed purpose of educating  consumers on “a broad spectrum of health topics” so they could “assume a more active role in the preservation
of their health.”

Decades later, that goal is the same. However, our 1981 readers would have been astonished to read about the medical advances described in the current issue of the magazine, including robotic surgery, therapeutic hypothermia and patients leaving the hospital two days after hip replacement surgery!

It makes one wonder what readers of ProHealth will be reading about in 2041.

To keep up with the tremendous surge in medical innovation over the last three decades, Miami Valley Hospital has not stood still. In recent years, we’ve expanded our physical facilities, notably the twelve-story patient tower for cardiovascular and orthopedic care at our main campus and the new Miami Valley Hospital South campus in Centerville.

Within those walls, patients receive exceptional healthcare. Some examples:

  • We have the only Level I (highest designation) trauma center in the region along with the ability to transport critically injured and ill patients there by air and mobile intensive care units.
  • We’ve expanded our Level III (highest designation for infant care) neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to provide care for premature and sick babies in all private rooms.
  • We were the first hospital in the region to introduce minimally invasive robotic surgery and are currently home to three da Vinci robots.

These new facilities, and the modern technology within, have enabled us to attract top-notch medical staff, such as the neurointerventional specialists described in this issue of ProHealth.

As I begin my tenure as the 16th in a long line of men and women who have led MVH during its 120-year history, I’m excited by the opportunity to build upon our proud legacy. My task is made easier by the hundreds of capable staff physicians and thousands of dedicated staff who have chosen healthcare as their profession and MVH as the best place to provide it.
