The Medical Imaging Interventional Center at Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) is where interventional radiology and NeuroInterventional procedures are performed 24/7/365.

Interventional Radiology (IR) at MVH offers an alternative to traditional surgery. IR procedures often replace open surgical procedures and are generally easier for the patient because they involve no large incisions, less risk, less pain, reduced length of stay and shorter recovery times.

Interventional radiologists are physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments performed using imaging guidance. Our interventional radiologists use imaging, such as X-rays or MRIs, to see inside your body, pinpoint where the problem is and determine how to treat you without surgery.

Interventional Radiology Procedures at Miami Valley Hospital

Our highly trained interventional radiologists can perform many procedures including:

  • Interventional Oncology – Minimally invasive procedures performed for the treatment of various cancers.
    • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) – This is an outpatient procedure used to treat tumors by heating and destroying cancer cells locally.
    • Cryoablation – This outpatient procedure kills and destroys cancer cells by freezing them. 
    • NanoKnife – A minimally invasive outpatient procedure used to treat inoperable tumors using localized electric currents. 
    • Y-90 Radioembolization – Treatment of various cancers within the liver using internal radiation delivered through the arterial supply to the liver.
    • Chemoembolization – Delivering chemotherapy directly to liver tumors via the arterial supply. 
  • Arterial Interventions – Outpatient procedures for the treatment of arterial blockage caused by peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Patients may be suffering from leg pain while walking or foot ulcerations. Arterial stenting and balloon angioplasty are minimally invasive procedures used to improve blood flow in patients’ arteries. 
  • Venous Interventions – Minimally invasive procedures performed to treat venous disease.
    • IVC filter placement and removal – A filter is placed in the inferior vena cava to prevent blood clots from moving from the legs to the lungs. 
    • Treatment of leg vein blood clots (DVT) with clot busting medication and clot removing devices.
    • Treatment of lower extremity vein reflux – Chronic venous insufficiency of the legs can cause chronic swelling, discoloration and ultimately ulcerations. Venous closure techniques are performed to prevent reflux of blood through the abnormal leg veins.
  • Vertebroplasty – An outpatient image-guided minimally invasive procedure used to treat severe back pain from vertebral body compression fractures. 
  • Dialysis Access
    • Dialysis catheters – Placement of dialysis catheters for patients who have kidney failure and require hemodialysis. 
    • Fistulogram and intervention – Evaluation and treatment for problematic arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) or grafts (AVG).
  • Venous Access – Placement of PICC lines, central lines and central venous ports.
  • Enteric Access – For patients who are unable to eat, tubes can be placed within the bowel for feeding. These procedures include gastrostomy tubes, gastrojejunostomy tubes and jejunostomy tubes.
  • Image-Guided Tissue Biopsy – A needle biopsy or sample of tissue obtained from a mass or other abnormal condition in the body to obtain diagnosis.
  • Drainage Procedures – The removal of fluid from a body cavity using a minimally invasive image-guided technique. These procedures include placement of drainage catheters for ascites, pleural effusions and abscesses. 
  • Urologic Procedures – Nephrostomy tubes and ureteral stents are placed for obstructed kidneys.
  • Biliary Procedures – Biliary drainage tubes and stents are placed for biliary obstruction.

MVH’s Neurointerventional Radiology program offers aneurysm coiling and other minimally invasive brain and stroke treatments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
