Meet Our Breast Center Team
The health care staff at the Breast Center at Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) and Miami Valley Hospital South brings many years of experience, knowledge and genuine compassion and kindness to patients. Meet the Breast Center staff leadership team at Miami Valley Hospital.
Amy McKenna, Breast Cancer Navigator
Amy McKenna began working at MVH in 2002 on the gynecology-oncology unit where she provided postoperative care to breast cancer patients recovering from surgery. In 2006, she became the first breast cancer coordinator at MVH. Amy developed and currently co-teaches the preoperative breast cancer class for breast cancer patients. She also works in the High Risk Breast Cancer Center at MVH South.
In 2010, Amy began facilitating the Young Women’s Breast Cancer Support Group at MVH. She received her bachelor’s of science degree in nursing from Wright State University and is a certified breast health specialist.
Nancy Thoma, Breast Cancer Navigator
Nancy Thoma has been caring for breast cancer patients at Miami Valley Hospital for over 30 years. She started her medical education in the MVH School of Nursing program. After receiving her diploma, Nancy received her bachelor’s of science degree in nursing at Miami University. She is also an oncology nurse, certified by the Oncology Nursing Society and Chemo Administration Certified. Nancy is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society. She became MVH’s second breast cancer navigator when she became certified as a breast health specialist in 2007.
Nancy co-teaches the pre-operative breast cancer class at MVH. She also works in the High Risk Breast Cancer Center at MVH South and she facilitates the “Still Me” breast cancer support group.
Kathy McCarthy, Coordinator for Breast Imaging
Kathy joined the Breast Center at MVH in 1999 and coordinates all breast center locations as well as sets policies and procedures. She received her education at the Kettering College of Medical Arts, where she received an associate of science in radiologic technology. She is a registered technologist in radiology and mammography.
Julie Sawyer, Genetic Counselor
Julie Sawyer is a board-certified genetic counselor specializing in the field of breast cancer genetics. She works with women who are concerned about their genetic risks for developing breast and ovarian cancer as the genetic counselor in the High Risk Breast Cancer Center at MVH South. Julie joined MVH in 2007, working in the perinatal center at the hospital’s main campus. In 2009, Julie joined the newly established High Risk Breast Cancer Center where she counsels and educates women about the genetics and heredity of breast cancer, developing educational presentations and participating in public health outreach activities.
Julie earned her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and classics from The Ohio State University in 1989 and a master’s degree in medical genetics from the University of Cincinnati in 2004. She is certified by the American Board of Genetic Counselors and is a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors. She participates in the Cancer Genetics Special Interest Group.
Julie has worked with Duke University Medical Center coordinating a satellite research study involving breast cancer genetics. She has also worked with Genzyme Genetics providing genetic counseling at perinatal centers in and around Atlanta, Georgia.
