Meet the staff leadership at the Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio.
Vanessa Sandarusi, Director of the Rehab Institute of Ohio
Vanessa Sandarusi oversees the Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) Sports Medicine Center’s rehabilitation section. She came to MVH in 2000 as part of an administrative fellowship. Her current responsibilities include all hospitalized and same-day rehabilitation services, the Sports Medicine Center, Pain Services, Occupational Medicine and the Department of Psychology.
Vanessa received her Master’s degree in Business Administration and her Master’s Degree in Health Service Administration from Xavier University. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy from Ohio State University and practiced in both clinical and managerial roles as an occupational therapist prior to joining the Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio.
Phillip Boarman, Clinical Coordinator for Acute Care Occupational Therapy and Hand Therapy
Phillip graduated from Sinclair Community College as an Occupational Therapy Assistant, then continued his education and received a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from The University of Findlay. He started his Occupational Therapy career working in skilled nursing facilities and outpatient hand therapy. Phil joined MVH in 2004 working on the general rehab team on the inpatient rehabilitation unit. In 2005, he transferred to the acute care occupational therapy department where he worked with a variety of diagnoses and worked with the development of the occupational therapy aspect of the orthopedics program. Also, during his time at MVH, he worked with the Epic team as an inpatient E-Synergy Trainer and as a Programmer Analyst for the ambulatory care team. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration at Seton Hall University and will be finished in 2013. Phil stepped into his current position as Clinical Coordinator for Acute Care Occupational Therapy in 2011 and Hand Therapy in 2012.
Robin Corey, Clinical Coordinator Physical Therapy, Inpatient Rehabilitation Program
Robin joined Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) in 1991 and worked as a Clinical Specialist in spinal cord injury. She took her present position in 2003.
Robin's education started at Pennsylvania State University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. While there she also received her certificate degree in Physical Therapy. At the University of Indianapolis, she received her Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy. At MVH, Robin taught as an Adjunct Professor at the Andrews University School of Physical Therapy and at the University of Dayton’s Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy. She has worked as a physical therapist at the University Hospital Rehabilitation Center of the Pennsylvania State University and the Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee, IL.
Gail Counts, PT
Gail has 26 years of experience as a physical therapist. For nineteen of these years, Gail worked at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton in acute care and outpatient rehabilitation including lymphedema treatment. She also worked at the Miami Valley Hospital Vandalia Clinic. She has worked with lymphedema patients for more than 16 years and was certified in Manual Lymphatic Drainage/Complete Decongestive Therapy Vodder Method in 2003.
Peggy Eigler, Team Leader for Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Program (CORP)
Peggy has been with Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) since 1978. She started as a physical therapist before moving to Clinical Coordinator and later, Team Leader. Peggy earned her Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Connecticut and her Master’s Degree at the University of Indianapolis.
Anita Marie Greer, Program Manager, Acute Therapy Services
Anita Marie received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Therapy from Mount Saint Joseph College in Ohio. She continued her education by simultaneously earning Master of Arts degrees in Music Therapy and Voice Pedagogy from Texas Woman’s University. In 1990, she returned to school again to earn a Master of Arts degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Cincinnati. Anita Marie joined Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) in 1996 as a Speech Pathologist specializing in the treatment of patients with brain injury. In 2006, she became the Clinical Coordinator for the Speech Department, responsible for coordinating evidence-based practice research, staff training and supervision, and patient/family education. In 2010, Anita Marie became the Program Manager for Acute Therapy Services.
Jessica Hallum, Nurse Manager of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit
Jessica joined Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) in 1999 as a Patient Care Technician for Mother/Baby. Jessica graduated from Wright State University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and joined the Inpatient Neuroscience Unit. Since that time, Jessica has served in various roles, including alternate Team Leader, Unit Practice Council Chair and Primary Collaborative Chair. Jessica was also instrumental in patient satisfaction rounding, the EPIC build team, development of the MVHS Patient Care Unit and MVH Trauma Unit. Before joining the Rehab Team, Jessica served as a Patient Flow Manager.
Lisa Holscher, Clinical Coordinator, Acute Physical Therapy
Lisa graduated from The Ohio State University in 1986 with a degree in Physical Therapy. She began her career at Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) as a Staff Therapist specializing in the treatment of acute care patients. In 1991, she became the Clinical Coordinator of Acute Physical Therapy where she is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department.
Lisa has served as an Adjunct Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at Andrews University for 10 years and is an Adjunct Professor in the Doctoral of Physical Therapy Program at the University of Dayton. She is certified as a Brain Injury Specialist.
Ashley Masoud, MPT
Ashley graduated from Andrews University with a Masters in Physical Therapy. She has seven years experience in physical therapy and five years experience in vestibular therapy. Ashley is a clinical instructor specially trained in vestibular rehabilitation. She has attended a course presented by Georgia Groomer-MacFilliwray, P.T., and a Clinical Integration Seminar by NeuroComm for Balance Manager for patients with balance and mobility impairments.
Adria Grillo-Peck, Director, Integrative Care Management
Adria received a Bachelor and Master degree from Wright State University. She has served as a Clinical Nurse, Clinical Nurse Educator, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Case Manager, Nurse Manager, and Director in her career at Miami Valley Hospital. Adria currently has responsibility for the Integrative Care Management Program, Bed Control, Administrative Officers, and the Pulmonary Performance Improvement Initiatives. Adria also serves as adjunct faculty at Wright State University, teaching students in the nursing skills lab.
Jessica Pelfrey, MPT
Jessica graduated from Andrews University in 2004 with a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy. She has taken additional course work in the use of biofeedback, and attended the “Beyond Kegels” program for the treatment of bladder, bowel and pelvic muscle dysfunction.
Melissa Peters, DPT, Program Manager of Outpatient Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine PT
Melissa joined Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) in July 2004 as a Staff Therapist on the general rehab team. She was the Inpatient Coordinator for four years and has been in her current position since March 2012. She also assists with supervising the Spinal Cord Team. Melissa received her Bachelor of Science from Ohio University in 2000. She did her postgraduate work at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. In 2004 she received a Doctoral of Physical Therapy.
Kathy Stachowski, Program Manager for CORP and HIRE
Kathy Stachowski joined Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) in 1992 as a Clinical Coordinator in Occupational Therapy. In 2004, she was promoted to Team Manager for Inpatient Rehabilitation Occupational Therapy, Recreational Therapy, and the HIRE Program. In 2008 Kathy became the Program Manager of CORP, HIRE and the ProWork Center. Currently Kathy serves as the Program Manager of CORP and HIRE. Kathy also oversees clinical educaiton in RIO. Prior to joining MVH, Kathy worked at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo and The Greenery in Clarkston, Michigan. Kathy has a Bachelor of Science from The Ohio State University. In 2003, the Brain Injury Association of America certified Kathy as a Brain Injury Specialist Trainer, and since then she has assisted more than 35 other individuals in becoming certified Brain Injury Specialists.
Angela Wale, Director of Nursing
Angela Wale received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Cedarville University in Ohio in 2001. She joined Miami Valley Hospital as a Nurse Extern in 2000 and gained her nursing experience on the Advanced Care Unit after graduation. Since that time, Angela has served in multiple roles within the organization, including Shift Manager of the Advanced Care Unit, Bed Flow Manager, and Nurse Manager of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. Angela received her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix in March 2011. She is currently serving as a Director of Nursing, including having responsibility for Inpatient Rehabilitation Nursing Care.
Linda Welin, Integrative Care Management (ICM) Manager
Linda has been with Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) since July 1969. She is a diploma graduate of the Miami Valley Hospital School of Nursing. Linda began her employment at MVH in the ICU and CICU. Prior to pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science degree at Wright State University, she served as the Manager of CICU. In January 2008 she started in her current role as ICM Manager, where she is responsible for the acute care coordinators, admission rehab coordinators and the case manager in rehab. Linda also served as the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) on Telemetry and as the Congestive Heart Failure CNS.
Michele Wilkerson, Clinical Coordinator, Speech Pathology
Michelle joined Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) in January 1999 as a Staff Speech Pathologist. She has been in her current position since October 2010. Michelle also performs videofluoroscopy and videostroboscopy studies for patients, provides patient/family education, staff training, and supervision of graduate student interns in Speech-Language Pathology. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology in 1985 and her Master of Science in Speech Pathology in 1986 from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She has clinical certification in Speech/Language Pathology.
