Miami Valley Hospital Unveils Plans for a Free-Standing Emergency Department in Greene County

(DAYTON, OH) August 20, 2012 - Miami Valley Hospital announces today that it will begin construction by the end of the month on a new 24- hour Emergency Department in Jamestown, OH. The project will be housed in the Living Waters Professional Building located at 4940 Cottonville Road. The hospital expects to begin treating emergency cases at the new facility by March 2013.

“Demand for emergency care in our region is increasing each year,” says James Pancoast President and CEO of Premier Health Partners, which operates Miami Valley Hospital. “Innovative hospitals across the country are using freestanding emergency centers as a way to improve access and drive down wait times.”

The new facility will be the first full-service ED built in Greene County to be built away from a hospital. The $6 million facility will provide hospital-level emergency services around the clock. It will occupy 30,200 square feet of space in the existing Jamestown medical complex.

Plans call for the facility to have 10 patient exam rooms, imaging services, including CT, X‐ray, ultrasound and a medical laboratory. Triage protocols will be in place for stabilization and immediate transfer of patients to Miami Valley Hospital if needed. A mobile intensive care unit, (an ambulance outfitted like an intensive care patient room) will be based at the new facility around the clock. CareFlight, Miami Valley’s medical helicopter, will be able to land and transport patients if needed.

A total of 75 employees will staff the new emergency department including board-certified physicians from Miami Valley Emergency Physicians which provides services to Miami Valley’s downtown emergency department and to Miami Valley Hospital South in Centerville.

“Patients from Jamestown and other communities in Greene, Clinton and Fayette Counties will benefit tremendously by having this service near to where they live,” says Bobbie Gerhart, president and CEO of Miami Valley Hospital. “The new 24-hour emergency facility will provide earlier treatment for emergency medical care, when seconds count.”

The new space is being designed by the Dayton firm The Architecture Group and constructed by Messer Construction company.

Jamestown physician Kevin Sharrett, MD, who owns the Living Water Medical Professional Building, has had a vision of developing a community resource for medical care close to home. In 2009 he located his family practice office to the site. A short time later Miami Valley Hospital added medical imaging and physical therapy services plus a time share office where medical specialists could see patients. The complex also houses a retail pharmacy.

“I could not be more excited about the Miami Valley Hospital Emergency Center coming to the Living Water Professional Building in Jamestown,” says Kevin Sharrett, MD whose practice is located in the building where the new emergency department will be built. “This facility will provide state-of-the-art emergency care that is so needed in our community.  As a family physician and county coroner, I realize how important it is to have high quality emergency care close to home. This new emergency department represents Miami Valley Hospital’s total commitment to the health and well being of the residents of Eastern Greene County and the surrounding communities.”
