About the Breast Center
Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) Breast Center has a strong commitment to the health and well being of our patients. That’s why we offer the latest techniques in screening and diagnostic mammography. We also offer diagnosis of breast cancer with less-invasive biopsy procedures than some practiced methods. The comprehensive Breast Cancer Program at MVH offers patients total care from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up. There is also a weekly breast cancer conference where many specialized physicians and staff review individual cases, putting more expert eyes and minds on an individual's case.
At MVH Breast Center, results of the diagnostic mammogram are received at the time of the exam, so there's no wait and less apprehension about the results. A board-certified radiology physician is on staff at all times to give an expert reading of the mammogram and address the results to the patient when needed.
Patients who have researched breast cancer are probably familiar with the term micro-calcifications. Most women have micro-calcifications, so spotting them with today's powerful mammography is common and not usually a sign of the presence of cancer. When the radiologist sees anything abnormal in a mammogram, the patient may be asked to return for additional mammographic views and/or Ultrasound. Positron emission tomography (PET), computerized tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be recommended to get further diagnostic information.
Anything seen as suspicious after further imaging may require a biopsy. Depending on findings, a minimally invasive image-guided biopsy or open biopsy may be requested. Both techniques require an office visit or same-day procedure. MVH Breast Center is one of the few facilities in the area offering the accuracy of stereotactic and ultrasound image-guided biopsies.
