Labor and Delivery
Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) nurses assigned to MVH Labor and Delivery (L and D) will provide support and family centered patient care in triage areas for pregnant women, birthing rooms, pre-op holding area, operating rooms, post anesthesia care unit (PACU), and the perinatal intensive care unit.
MVH Labor and Delivery Unit Details
Number of Beds: 41 beds.
Types of Patients Cared for on Unit: You will work with women in labor, women having a cesarean section, dilatation and curettage (D and C), cerclage, post-partum tubal ligation, women with high risk pregnancy conditions, patients recovering from surgery, and any patients throughout the hospital who are pregnant and require fetal monitoring.
Common Procedures: MVH nurses participate in birth, cesarean sections, amniocentesis, ultrasound, non-stress tests (NSTs), and triage of patients.
Shift Options: 12 hour day or night shifts, some traditional eight hour shifts, some 10 hour shifts. Shift times are subject to change at the discretion of the Manager or Director at any time.
Orientation Classes: Your orientation is based upon the individual's needs and experience. This is coordinated by the unit based educator, who is a clinical expert in the L and D area. There is a 24-week internship offered for new graduates through the Center of Nursing Excellence.
Experience/Certifications: L and D experience is preferred, but new employees are also welcomed to our unit. Neonatal Resuscitation Provider certification is required, as well as advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). Employees must also complete a fetal monitoring class and a labor support class as part of orientation.
