Birth and Family Education/Lactation Program
This unit is comprised of 1 full time RN, 4 part-time RN's, and 3 support RN's whose role is as a Certified Lacation Consultant. They act as consultants to staff and patients concerning issues, concerns and support in relation to the breastfeeding couplet/family. They see inpatients from 8:00a.m. - 5:00p.m., Monday through Friday and 8:00a.m. - 4:00p.m. Saturday and Sunday. They provide services by appointment, in a Lactation Clinic, 3 days a week, following a patient's discharge from the hospital. They also staff a Warm-Line for mothers who may have questions and concerns that can be addressed over the phone.
The Birth and Family Education function has 6 part-time Certified Childbirth Educations and 6 support Certified Childbirth Educations. All staff are registered nurses with 2-3 years minimum of perinatal nursing. They teach a variety of classes to mothers and their families to help them prepare for childbirth, infant care and safety, breastfeeding and parenting and establishing new roles and relationships. Classes are offered 7 days and 4 evenings each week. They also provide education to our bedrest patients in the hospital. Classes are offered at the Miami Valley Hospital main campus and at the South Campus.
