Brethen Center Programs

The growth and expansion of robotic surgery at hospitals allow more patients to benefit from minimally invasive surgery which provides patients with the potential for better outcomes than conventional surgery. Being able to extend these benefits to patients depends on surgical teams becoming proficient in preparing for and performing da Vinci surgery.

The primary purpose of the Brethen Center is to develop and increase a surgical team’s confidence and competence with robotic surgery. The goal is to cultivate a self-sufficient surgical team fully capable of performing surgical procedures. The Brethen Training Center is open 24/7.

The Brethen Center has two types of programs. Phase I is for surgeons. Phase II is for critical surgical staff.

Phase I for Surgeons

Executive Session

Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) will host two sessions annually with 100 senior level executives from around the country learning from the success of MVH’s robotic surgery program

Surgeon Training Enhancement Program (STEP)

STEP is a formal two-day program offered four times a year for stalled robotic surgeons (four surgeons per class).

  • Day 1: Dual Console case observation and surgeon lecture
  • Day 2: Dual Console case observation and simulation in SIM Center

Surgeon Lecture Program

The lecture program is a formal 1.5 day program offered four times a year for experienced da Vinci surgeons

  • Day 1: Dinner lecture by experienced MVH robotic surgeon
  • Day 2: Two Dual Console case observations with a discussion in between

Currently at the Brethen Center the two-day program is for gynecological surgery. Urologic, thoracic and general surgery robotic training will be on boarded in the future. Premier Health physicians are the trainees and proctors.

Phase II for Critical Surgical Staff

OR Staff Efficiency Course

This is a formal course for OR team launching a robotic surgery program.

  • Features both hands-on and didactic sessions
  • Focuses on decreasing OR turnover times
  • Courses scheduled as requested

Robotic Surgery Coordinator Course

This is a formal course offered four times a year specifically for new robotic surgery program coordinators.

  • Features both hands-on and didactic sessions
  • Class size to be determined
