MVH Set to Commemorate 125 Years of Care

DAYTON, Ohio (October, 14, 2015) – Miami Valley Hospital is celebrating its 125th anniversary this weekend and is hosting a community celebration on Sunday, October 18 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Many free activities have been planned for the celebration and will take place in the courtyard off the main entrance. Guest can expect to be entertained by a host of street performers, listen to live musical performances, pick a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch to take home, and enjoy refreshments.

Inside the hospital lobby pet therapy dogs will be on hand to greet guests before they get complementary health screening. Also featured in the lobby will be a display of photographs depicting the hospital’s history and historic artifacts from the former Miami Valley Hospital School of Nursing. Guest can park at no charge in the Visitor Garage.

Miami Valley Hospital was founded in 1890 by the Reverend Carl Mueller and a group of Protestant ministers in east Dayton’s predominantly German speaking community. The original 37-bed hospital opened in a private residence on East Fourth Street St. in downtown Dayton. Four years later the founders realized more space was needed to treat the booming population in and around Dayton. Funds for a new hospital were raised and land was purchased at Apple and Main Streets. The new hospital was dedicated in 1894 and several years later was renamed Miami Valley Hospital to better reflect the region it served.

Miami Valley today has a total of 925 beds and is a nationally recognized medical facility. Nearly 5,000 staff members and 1,200 active and courtesy physicians care for patients at MVH. The hospital has expanded to serve other communities as well. In 2007 Miami Valley Hospital South opened to serve the growing communities in southern Montgomery and western Greene counties. The Miami Valley Hospital Jamestown Emergency Center was dedicated in 2012 to provide emergency care to residents living in eastern Greene County and surrounding communities.

“Over the past 125 years Miami Valley Hospital has stayed true to the mission of our founding fathers, says Mark Shaker, president and CEO of MVH. “We are here to serve the community and to help restore health to its citizens and we plan to be here for many more years to come.”
