Electrophysiology Lab

Electrical impulses stimulate the heart to beat and pump blood with a steady rhythm. The heart rate changes with physical activity, state of mind, emotional responses, and environmental factors. Whatever its rate, the intervals between beats should be constant.

Heart attacks, aging, and high blood pressure may scar heart tissue, and cause it to beat in an uneven pattern. When the electrical system of a person’s heart makes the upper chambers (the atria) quiver or fibrillate it causes the lower chambers (the ventricles) to beat irregularly. When this happens, it’s called an arrhythmia and the consequences range from minor to life-threatening. Almost 3 million Americans live with some form of heart rhythm problem or cardiac arrhythmia. The Electrophysiology Lab is where problems associated with the electrical conduction of the heart are diagnosed and treated.

The likelihood of developing an arrhythmia increases with age. Sometimes, erratic heartbeats can be managed with medication, but half of all diagnosed patients fail drug therapy. If left untreated, those patients have an increased risk of blood clots, stroke, and a chance of developing heart failure.
