Vascular Rehabilitation

Miami Valley Hospital offers the region’s first outpatient vascular rehabilitation program, on the main campus of Miami Valley Hospital.

If you’ve been diagnosed with peripheral artery disease (PAD), the vascular rehabilitation program can help improve your vascular health and slow the progression of PAD through supervised exercise and education.

PAD is a common circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to arms and legs. Symptoms, most notably leg pain when walking, are noticed once blood flow is reduced to the point that it can’t keep up with demand. PAD is also likely to be a sign of a more widespread accumulation of fatty deposits in your arteries, called atherosclerosis. This condition may reduce blood flow to your heart and brain, as well as legs.

Comprehensive Approach

The vascular rehabilitation program focuses on improving your fitness level and teaching lifestyle changes that can help you cope with symptoms of PAD, improve mobility, and manage factors that may increase your risk for cardiovascular disease.

We take a comprehensive, team approach to help improve your overall cardiovascular health. Our registered nurses, exercise physiologists, and registered dietitians have advanced degrees and extensive experience in caring for patients who need cardiac, pulmonary, and vascular rehabilitation. Working with your physician, our team of specialists will design an individual treatment plan with a program of exercise and education to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Exercise Is the Key

Carefully supervised exercise is the core of vascular rehabilitation. Participants exercise three times a week while medically supervised by our staff of nurses and exercise physiologists. The program offers treadmills, exercise bicycles, free weights, and other exercise equipment. During each session, your heart rate and blood pressure are monitored. Should a staff member observe anything unusual during exercise, your physician will be notified immediately.

Upon successful completion of the program, you may continue exercising at Miami Valley Hospital by entering the maintenance phase of rehabilitation.

How to Get Started

To get started, call (937) 208-2375(937) 208-2375 for your first appointment. To participate in the program, we will need to verify with your physician that you are physically ready for vascular rehabilitation. This can be done through a physician referral or by talking with your physician. Our staff can help you through this process.

An initial assessment includes a six-minute walk and vital signs.
