Vascular Rehabilitation

Do your legs or buttocks hurt when you walk? When you stop walking, does the pain quickly go away? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you may have peripheral arterial disease (PAD), a narrowing of the blood vessels in the lower legs.

Call your physician and make an appointment. Talk with your health care provider about screenings or tests used to diagnose PAD, and ask about treatment options to slow its progression. The latest medical evidence shows that an exercise program called vascular rehabilitation may be a beneficial part of the treatment of PAD.

Vascular Rehabilitation

The vascular rehabilitation program provided by Miami Valley Hospital is located at the hospital’s main campus. It is an exercise and education program designed to improve vascular health and slow the progression of peripheral arterial disease. The program focuses on improving individual fitness levels and teaching lifestyle changes that help you cope with symptoms of PAD, improve mobility, and manage various factors that may increase your risk for cardiovascular disease. This is the first outpatient vascular rehabilitation program in the area.

We take a comprehensive, team approach to help improve your overall cardiovascular health. Our multi-disciplinary staff of registered nurses, exercise physiologists, and dedicated registered dietitians has advanced degrees and extensive experience in the care of patients who need cardiac, pulmonary and vascular rehabilitation. Working with your physician, our team of specialists will design an individual treatment plan with a program of exercise and education to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Exercise is Key

Carefully supervised exercise is the core of vascular rehabilitation. Participants exercise three times a week and are medically-supervised by our staff of nurses and exercise physiologists while using treadmills, exercise bicycles, free weights, and other exercise equipment. During each session, your heart rate and blood pressure are monitored. Should a staff member observe anything unusual during exercise, your physician will be notified immediately.

Upon successful completion of the program, you may continue exercising at MVH by entering the maintenance phase of rehabilitation.

How to Get Started

Getting started is as easy as making a phone call to (937) 208-2375 for your first appointment. To participate in our program, our staff will need to verify with your physician that you are physically ready for vascular rehabilitation. This can be done through a physician referral or by talking with your physician. Our staff can help you thorough this process.

Initial assessments include a six-minute walk and vital signs.

Fees

A complete fee schedule is available upon request. Before starting our vascular rehabilitation program, we encourage you to verify coverage with your insurance carrier.
