CareFlight Education and Outreach

Teamwork is the foundation for the success of CareFlight when working with area EMS, fire and law enforcement agencies. We offer in-depth, full-spectrum training, continuing education, and opportunities to ride along on one of our aircraft or Mobile Intensive Care Units.

CareFlight ensures that teams that work together to provide medical care and transport for those in need are continuously educated on new information in the field. CareFlight nurses and paramedics provide continuing education in the form of medical lectures and safety training to hospitals, including local emergency personnel, to help give the region the best emergency care available. In addition, fire and local EMS departments are also trained by CareFlight teams in critical procedures such as landing zone set-up and self- and patient safety. The team educates local paramedics for their certification, as well.

CareFlight Ride-Along for Dispatchers

In appreciation for all they do, CareFlight is offering a ride-along exclusively for dispatchers from May 15 through 31.

To be eligible to ride on the helicopter, you must have a weight of 225 pounds or less with all clothing and gear (including a helmet that weighs approximately five pounds). Your ride-along experience is up to two eight-hour shifts with the CareFlight crews experiencing what a day in the life of CareFlight is. You will go on calls, review equipment and procedures and get to know the staff better. This is an observation only experience and will be providing no patient care.

To register for the ride-along, please send the registration form to CareflightEvents@premierhealth.com and a person from the ride-along committee will call you to schedule your days with us. Registration will end on Friday, May 3. We look forward to spending the day with you!

Mobile Education Lab

CareFlight also provides the Mobile Education Lab (MEL). This interactive, high-tech mobile lab on wheels offers emergency medicine education through the use of a human simulator, video presentations, and hands-on training. For more information about the MEL, call (937) 208-2803(937) 208-2803.

CareFlight On the Road, On the Farm and On the Lake

On the Road/On the Farm is an outreach program developed by CareFlight Air and Mobile Services in conjunction with the Trauma Program at Miami Valley Hospital. The program travels to different counties across the region to provide relevant education for EMS and pre-hospital care providers. Participants generally receive six to eight continuing education hours related to a variety of trauma topics. In addition, a trauma surgeon from Miami Valley Hospital’s Level I Trauma Program leads a Trauma Case Review, which features actual trauma cases transported from the host county to Miami Valley Hospital to further enhance their educational experience.

On the Farm and On the Lake focus specifically on farming/water accidents. Through lecture, hands-on simulation and a panel discussion, participants learn how to manage farm/lake accidents, the extrication tools required and priorities of patient care.

Drive Smart Program

CareFlight participates in many programs for the public, such as Drive Smart, a drug and alcohol awareness program for high school students. It is presented by CareFlight, MVH Trauma, local police, fire, and EMS. This is a 60-minute program where an accident scene with casualties is simulated. The simulation of death and injury has been made as real as possible, in an effort to make students aware of the effects of bad choices. One student is given an alcohol test, while others go through the full procedure of being taken away by ambulance and CareFlight. This powerful simulation brings home the message of safety to a young, receptive audience, and also reminds all involved of the need to make smart driving decisions for the benefit of all on the road.
