Level I Trauma Center

Miami Valley Hospital’s Level I Trauma Center, the only one in the region, provides the highest level of care for the most critically injured patients in southwest Ohio and east Indiana, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Trauma care begins at the scene of a serious injury when emergency medical services (EMS) notify the Miami Valley Hospital Level I Trauma Center that a trauma patient is on the way. Our multidisciplinary trauma team assembles and meets the patient upon arrival at the Shaw Emergency and Trauma Center. When every moment matters, the skilled trauma team provides specialty critical care — such as advanced surgery and intensive care — and coordinates rehabilitation and follow-up care.

Miami Valley Hospital also partners with community hospitals to improve care for patients who would benefit from a Level I trauma center. Trauma transfer agreements facilitate prompt identification of patients with severe injuries and expedite transfer if needed.

Trauma Center Services

Miami Valley Hospital’s Level I Trauma Center, one of the busiest and most experienced in Ohio, provides care around the clock for the most seriously injured patients in 17 counties in southwest Ohio and east Indiana. Each year more than 3,300 victims of major trauma receive care after injuries resulting from vehicle crashes, industrial accidents, penetrating trauma or falls. Our Adult Burn Unit is ready to serve patients with burns of every severity level.

Upon notification that a trauma patient is on the way to Miami Valley, an activation system alerts a multidisciplinary trauma team to assemble in the Shaw Emergency and Trauma Center to meet the patient. This multidisciplinary trauma team includes trauma-trained staff from the blood bank, medical imaging, laboratory, intensive care unit and operating rooms, plus other specialties as needed.
