Trauma Units

The trauma team coordinates the patient’s care throughout the hospital stay, regardless of patient care unit or severity of injury. There are multiple units within the hospital where a trauma patient may be transferred, depending on their needs. The two primary areas are the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and the Trauma Unit. Patients may also be transferred to other hospital areas, including the Neuro Intensive Care Unit, Neuro Advanced Care Unit, Orthopedic Spine Unit, or the Heart and Vascular Intensive Care Unit.

As recovery continues, patients may be treated at Miami Valley’s Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio and the Trauma Outpatient Clinic.

Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)

Critically ill trauma patients are cared for in Miami Valley Hospital’s 23-bed surgical intensive care unit (SICU).  Multidisciplinary teams work to provide the highest quality of safe care to patients and families. The trauma team continues a multidisciplinary approach to include care from registered nurses, patient care technicians, physicians, pharmacists, dietitians, respiratory, and rehabilitative therapists to ensure progression and continuity in the continuum of care.

Staff in the SICU have specialty training and orientation in the care of the critically ill patient, with a focus on trauma and neuro-trauma. All nurses are certified in basic and advanced cardiac life support. Many have also achieved nationally recognized Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) and Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certifications.
