When you or a loved one is diagnosed with a potentially debilitating memory disorder, Miami Valley Hospital puts advances and treatments to work for you.

Diagnosing a Memory Disorder

Memory loss can be triggered by many different causes, such as depression, vitamin deficiency, and even hormone imbalance. While the vast majority of memory loss is attributed to Alzheimer’s disease, there are other forms of memory loss. A proper diagnosis requires an examination by an experienced neuroscience team. The earlier memory disorders are diagnosed, the more effective treatment can be at controlling symptoms.

A thorough assessment includes interviewing the patient and family to establish a full patient history including lifestyle, personality and work habits. Also examined is the patient’s medical history, such as medications, symptoms and behaviors. Following this initial examination, further tests may be ordered, including:

  • Neurological tests to diagnose thinking and memory problems
  • Physical and neurological exam to test the reflexes; muscle tone and strength; ability to get up from a chair and walk; sense of sight and hearing; coordination; and balance
  • Lab tests to test the blood for treatable causes of memory loss, such as thyroid disorders or vitamin deficiencies
  • Specialized brain imaging studies, such as computed tomography (CT) scans to rule out causes such as stroke; magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to determine how the brain has changed; and positron emission tomography (PET) scans to detect levels of plaques (abnormal clusters of protein) or tangles (twists in the brain’s transport system) in the brain; functional MRI
  • Neuropsychological testing, done by a specialist, that uses specialized tests for cognitive, language, memory and motor skills to determine changes in the brain.

Treatment of Memory Disorders

The primary treatment for Alzheimer’s disease is cognitive rehabilitation with the aid of medications. Several medications are available to prevent symptoms from worsening and improve overall function and quality of life. Learn more.

Researchers are investigating the use of deep brain stimulation to treat Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. So far, DBS has been used to treat movement disorders such as essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease. Researchers are also optimistic about other medications now in development to treat Alzheimer’s. Several clinical trials are underway for these medications. For more information about these trials, ask your physician.
