Foot and ankle Services

The feet and ankles are one of the most frequently-injured areas of the body. Foot and ankle pain can limit the ability to enjoy life to the fullest. We want to help patients overcome their pain and improve their quality of life.

Foot and ankle care is a subspecialty of orthopedics and podiatry that deals with the treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of disorders of the foot and ankle. Our trained specialists believe that prompt diagnosis, early intervention, and prevention are essential for care and treatment of foot or ankle conditions.

Our orthopedic physicians are more than just doctors. They’re specialists in helping patients overcome pain and improve their quality of life. They’ll take the time to learn about a patient’s specific needs.

Our nationally-recognized physicians evaluate patients carefully and explore non-surgical or surgical treatment options to reduce or eliminate pain. These may include physical therapy or pain management through steroid injections, or anti-inflammatory medications or surgery.

Foot and Ankle Surgery

If foot or ankle pain continues to prevent one from activities or performing simple functions of daily life, then it may be time to consider surgery.

Should surgery be necessary, patients receive the outstanding care that makes them and their family comfortable. Some conditions that might lead to ankle or foot surgery include:

  • Pain due to arthritis and mechanical conditions
  • Infection
  • Injury and fractures
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Recurrent ankle sprains or ankle instability
  • Irregularity in the shape or look of the foot or ankle, such as bunions, acquired flatfoot or crooked toes and other deformities

Ankle Replacement

In some cases, a physician may recommend ankle replacement surgery. An ankle replacement may significantly reduce or eliminate pain and allow the patient to resume many of the activities he or she enjoyed before the pain began.

Minimally-Invasive Procedures

In some cases, minimally-invasive surgical options may be available. Arthroscopy enables a surgeon to inspect, diagnose, and repair problems inside the ankle with just a few small incisions.

During arthroscopy, the Miami Valley Hospital surgeon inserts a tiny camera, called an arthroscope, into the ankle joint through a small incision. The camera displays pictures on a television screen, and the surgeon uses these images to guide miniature surgical instruments through other small incisions.

Like other minimally-invasive procedures, arthroscopy has some important benefits:

  • Less pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Less scarring
  • Less blood loss
