Members of the care team include:

The surgeon, or surgeon’s partners, visit patients on a regular basis during the hospital stay, and will examine and assess patients during follow-up office visits. Surgeons that are fellowship-trained have attained the highest level of expertise and training available in the medical field.

Orthopedic surgical resident – participates with the physician and care team. This gives the physician an extra pair of experienced hands to facilitate surgical care.

Hospitalist – board-certified internal medicine physician who works only in the hospital and are professionals in caring for complicated hospitalized patients. They often partner with surgeons in patient care.

Anesthesia care team – meets with patients just before surgery. After reviewing and assessing the patient’s medical history and current state of health, he or she will determine the medications required to keep the patient comfortable throughout surgery. After surgery, he or she will bring the patient to a conscious state, monitor their vital signs, and ensure that the necessary pain medication is administered. Anesthesiologists determine when the patient is ready to leave the recovery room.

Chiropractor – health profession that specializes in the evaluation of the body’s structural spinal and neurological systems and their effect on your overall health. Treatment may include chiropractic manipulation or adjustments and individualized strengthening and conditioning plans.

The clinical nurse specialist will also be part of the preoperative class for patients having joint replacement surgery.

Orthopedic Nurse Navigator – is an advocate, educator and experienced guide for the surgical patient, as well as family members through the total joint replacement treatment plan.

Patient care technician – helps patients with activities of daily living, such as bathing, toileting, and walking during the hospital stay. Patient care technicians work alongside nurses and report to them on all issues related to patient care.

Physical therapist – dedicated licensed professional therapists, many with doctoral degrees, skilled in the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions that affect a patient's ability to function.

Occupational therapist – helps patients learn safe ways to do everyday activities, such as bathing, dressing, toileting, cooking, cleaning, and laundry.

In some instances, they help families locate community resources; assist in crisis interventions, provide counseling, educate patients about their diagnosis, and respond to the unique needs of families before the patient is discharged. They also provide information and resources for the patient and their family to prepare for transition.
