Acute Physical Therapy

Patients who are hospitalized for an urgent medical event or planned surgery may need acute physical therapy during that time. We work to improve functional mobility and strength during recovery.

Therapy Services During Hospitalization

When a doctor orders physical therapy as a part of patient care, the team of physical therapists at Miami Valley Hospital Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio works to improve functional mobility and strength during recovery.

We also help to determine if patients need further physical therapy after discharge. To help in the at-home recovery process, we make recommendations for equipment, assistance, and home modifications.

Conditions Treated

Acute Services

Customized acute physical therapy services program may include:

  • Assessment and treatment to improve functional mobility, including sitting on the side of the bed, getting up into a chair, walking, and being able to climb stairs.
  • An individualized exercise program to help increase strength for improved movement.
  • A focus on preventing complications should a patient be hospitalized for an extended period of time.
  • Education and family training as needed to help a patient’s family learn how to best assist in recovery.
  • An examination of a patient’s safety and ability to care for themselves.
  • Recommendations for assistance needed at home, and for continued therapy after discharge from the hospital.
  • Recommendations for home modification (outside railings, ramps) and equipment (wheelchair, walker, crutches, cane) that may be needed to support safety and independence.
  • Collaboration with a patient’s doctor, nurse, social worker, care coordinator, and other therapists to develop the plan best meet a patient’s needs.

Acute Physical Therapy Team

An acute physical therapy team is highly-qualified and trained to help patients throughout recovery.

  • Acute physical therapy has an active role in many of the Joint Commission diagnostic certifications, including such surgeries as total knee and total hip replacements, chronic pulmonary disease, heart attacks, and strokes.
  • Our team includes certified brain injury specialists.
  • Several team members are part of the teaching staff in the University of Dayton’s doctorate of physical therapy program.

Many physical therapy and physical therapy assistant students train at our facility under the guidance of American Physical Therapy Association credentialed clinical instructors.
